Karaoke at the CBD - Mizuya and K1

When you hear the word "karaoke" you might internally say in your head "Oh god, why?" and have various cringe-worthy images of middle aged folks (heaven forbid, your parents), belting it out to a power ballad or love song in the ultimate tone-deaf fashion.

That doesn't mean karaoke can't be fun though, for the past few years many karaoke lounges and bars have been popping up all over Sydney and their demand and popularity has stood the tests of time. In addition, their demand is predominantly from the younger age bracket. That's right everyone, all the "cool kids" are doing it. Be prepared to add "karaoke nights" to your itinerary of pub crawls and "clubbing" nights.

The two karaoke bars I'll be mentioning - and highly recommend - are K1 Lounge and Mizuya. Both places are located in Sydney's CBD and are a short walk from Town Hall train station. I have been to both karaoke lounges a handful of times and my experiences with them have always been good.

K1 Karaoke Lounge

K1 Karaoke lounge is located at Sydney's Chinatown on Dixon St. It's on the "smaller" side of karaoke venues compared to what's available. Despite this, it's reliable (meaning, you'll always get a room on a busy night - always good for last minute or spontaneous decisions) and best of all it's inexpensive compared to the rates offered at other places. They boast a selection of over 100,000 songs available from 90's classics to today's top 40 hits. I'd recommend this karaoke lounge if you're looking for something cheap and haven't explored the realm that is karaoke lounges. To check out the room rates click here

Mizuya - Japanese Restaurant & Karaoke

Mizuya also has a Japanese restaurant and bar on top of it's karaoke rooms - Image sourced from: http://www.sakeonline.com.au
Located in the hubbub of George St, Mizuya is an establishment that combines a Japanese restaurant, bar, and karaoke lounges all in one (perfect for convenience and for the lazy). I would classify it as being on the "fancy" side of karaoke bars in terms of service and interior design. According to their website, they have 150,000 songs to choose from in four different languages. Mizuya's song selection is also on par with K1 Lounge in terms of mainstream "top 40" hits, and 90's old school. Mizuya is on the pricier side when it comes to room rates (check them out here) in comparison to K1, all for the right reasons though.

Mizuya has touch-screen LCD menus in their karaoke rooms and their restaurant. You'll be lying if you said this wasn't cool. - Image sourced from: http://www.ador.com.au

Possibly one of the most creative aspects of Mizuya is their ordering system. Small LCD touch-screens are situated in their karaoke lounges - and even their restaurant - for quick and easy ordering. When you're done, you're food will be shortly sent to you (check out their full menu here) - convenience at its finest.

I would definitely recommend Mizuya for birthday parties or if you wanted a karaoke lounge with more benefits. Also, if you have intentions to go with a big group of mates on a popular night (i.e. Fridays or Saturdays) then I recommend booking in advance to ensure you get a room, they tend to get popular during those periods.
